Ancestor’s journey
The direct ancestors of the Ainu people of Hokkaido, the indigenous people of this area, belong to a group called “Satsumon culture”. The ruins of this culture are mainly on the banks of the river, especially there are hundreds of ruins of pit dwelling near the mouth of river. Ruins of the estuary baseline are a good example. People hunted, fished, and lived a nature-integrated life. This is a traditional life built over thousands of years since the Jōmon and Zoku-Jōmon(Epi-Jōmon) period. In Teshio town, you can trace the footsteps of your ancestors from middle of the Jōmon period (about 4,000 years ago).
祖先の道程
この地の先住民、北海道アイヌの直接の祖先は「擦文文化」と呼ぶグループに入る。この文化の遺跡は主に川の沿岸にあり、特に河口付近には何百もの竪穴住居跡が残っている。河口基線遺跡はその良い例である。人々は狩猟、漁労を行い、自然にたくみにとけこんだ生活を送ったが、これは、縄文時代、続縄文時代以来何千年の間に築かれた生活の伝統を受け継いだものである。天塩町では縄文中期（約4,000年前）から祖先の足跡を辿ることができる。
